AMMO NYC = 17" Forged D90
A few months ago I had a pleasure of chatting with Larry Kosilla, owner and founder of AMMO NYC and his largely successful Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/AMMONYCdotcom). With both of us being Porsche owners, we chatted about current build statuses and Larry explained to me that he had a problem. The problem was Larry's love of the classic Porsche wheel, the D90, but his recent inability to continue to use the wheel on his car due to a much needed brake upgrade. The size of the newly fitted Porsche 965 "Big Red's" simply didn't leave enough room in the wheel to house the brakes without contact with the caliper...and the D90's were retired.
Our mission was obvious...bring the D90 back to life...but in an augmented form.
A set of original 16" D90's were located (thanks to our friends at Engineered Automotive) and the measurement process began, carefully measuring and recording each element of the D90's profile. For this mission to be completed successfully, the end result needed to be a wheel that looked exactly like 16" D90, but scaled to 17"
The result was a strong understanding of the key elements of the wheel, the thickness of the spokes, the size and shape of the windows, the depth of the legs and the overall convex radius and drop of the face. Being a staggered setup, the process needed to be completed for both front and rear wheels as they are quite different (as any true D90 lover would know)
When drawing and engineering the new wheels, the recorded measurements were all scaled in order to produce the 1-inch larger 17" D90
Several rounds of design and render took place in order to accomplish the desired outcome. Half-way through the process, the decision was also made to move away from a monoblock construction to that of a 2-pc. The shape of the raw monoblock forging simply did not enable us to recreate the desired convex face of the D90...and moving to 2-pc made it possible.
Here they are...fresh off the mill.
From here it was off to colour. Larry requested we keep with the black theme that his car was maintaining while in the care of J&B Body Works. These wheels are to be his street wheels so clean and simple was the call.
Of course, we brought the AMMO NYC brand into the wheel and laser cut his Drive+Protect logo and AMMO.
Laser Engraving enabled us to get all of the ultra fine details of the AMMO Logo
Fast forward and it was off to present the wheels to Larry. I think the following image tells the story.
Thanks to Larry for trusting AWC with such a huge piece of his 964 reconstruction. It could have gone wrong...but happy to report it went very very right.
And another gratuitous shot of Larry's stunning 964.
